Meet the Expert: NY Elite Interview with Trainer Alex Folacci
NY Elite: If you had to define all that you do in a few words, what would you say?
Alex Folacci: I would say that I am really lucky to be living and working in such an amazing city like New York!
I am very grateful to be living from my passion and to be working everyday with my amazing clients that I consider friends!
NY Elite: How would you describe your philosophy about being fit and healthy?
Alex Folacci: Being fit and healthy is a whole process. It takes time and dedication. It is often hard to achieve those goals, but it is always worth it!
NY Elite: What gives you the most motivation?
Alex Folacci: My motivation is to be able to help as many people as possible improve their health and fitness.
I also love to mentor new trainers and to teach them about various training methods, so they can help more people their fitness training.
NY Elite: According to you, what makes you be a good trainer?
Alex Folacci: My athletic background combined with my studies in university helped come up with a cutting edge coaching method. I’ve been coached and mentored by some of the best coaches in France since I was 14 years old and it gave me tremendous experience and knowledge. I also have been a high level athlete in many different sports that I started to practice when I was five years old.
Most trainers just get a 2 weeks online certification and start coaching clients. I took a more serious road, and studied at the University 6 years about the Exercise Science and Sports Management (Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree).
NY Elite: Are you self-employed or do you work at a gym?
Alex Folacci: I am self employed and I don’t work for a gym. I coach my clients wherever is the most convenient and helpful for them; at different gym locations, in their building’s private gym, in parks, on the track, wherever keeps my clients want.
NY Elite: What type of training do you offer?
Alex Folacci: To be the most athletic, aesthetic and healthy version of yourself you will need to practice 3 kinds of activities: running, weightlifting, and stretching (cardio, weights, yoga). People often only do one of those, and you can see at their body that they are actually very limited in their fitness level and don’t even realize it…
When I coach my athletes, I make sure to customize every workouts for what they need. I work on their strength and conditioning, their mobility, their core, their aerobic and cardio capacity, their coordination and balance, and on their skills and technique. My coaching method includes a mix of CrossFit, powerlifting, kick-boxing, running, yoga, gymnastics, weightlifting, bodybuilding, and mini golf! Just kidding on the mini golf…
NY Elite: How do you view your role as a personal trainer/fitness expert?
Alex Folacci: My role as a trainer is to make sure that my clients train safely, have fun with me, and reach their fitness goals. I am always very careful with their form and technique on every exercise. I am there to push and challenge my clients while keeping in mind their specific goals and training program. I also have to make sure that my they are eating healthy and not drinking and partying too much. I will never prevent them from enjoying their life, but often, I need to make them realize that they should slow down on some bad habits and try to change a few things in their diet
NY Elite: Do you have a specific approach for male clients who would like to gain muscle mass as far as training goes?
Alex Folacci: For a male client looking to gain muscle mass, I will put him on a powerlifting-bodybuilding training plan. I include in almost every workout 1 km or 1 mile run to improve the heart, the lungs, burn fat, and get warmed up for the session. I will also add some flexibility and mobility in order to keep a good range of motion on every exercises and keep the joints and muscles injury free. For the diet, upping protein intake with lots of white eggs, lean chicken, and protein shakes will help to increase muscle mass and to recover from training.
NY Elite: What are your strengths as a personal trainer/fitness expert?
Alex Folacci: My strengths as a trainer besides my knowledge, is that I create a personal relationship with each of my clients. I try to make their sessions a very important part in their life and I make sure to check in with them outside of the gym, so they are definitely getting a real value from our collaboration.
NY Elite: Which advice would you give to people looking to get fit?
Alex Folacci: You often hear trainers say that to get fit it is 80% of diet and 20% of training. This isn’t true at all. The reality is that it depends on your genetics, which will have an impact on your muscle gain and muscle retention, and also on the way you digest and process the food inside of your body. You need to keep that in mind when finding what works for you.
The other factor that is often forgotten is the stress. If you have a lot of anxiety because of your stressful job, for example, you will produce cortisone and your body will automatically get swollen and heavier. To fight this “bad stress”, I advise to seek peaceful and relaxing activities such as massage, listening to music, taking a warm bath, and not stressing about the little things in life. At the opposite end of the spectrum, we have a “good stress” hormone called adrenaline and it’s released with high intensity workouts and when you get into “BEAST MODE”.
NY Elite: If a customer comes to you seeking a weight loss, how do you develop a plan for him/her?
Alex Folacci: Someone looking to lose fat will have to primarily run. Running is the best fitness activity of them all. I will also include lots of abs and core training, and some high intensity light weightlifting, in order to get a good sweat and still strengthen the muscles. For example, if I get a male client weighing 200 lbs at 5”10, we would have to focus on burning 35 lbs of fat and building 12 lbs of muscles, in order to reach an aesthetic and athletic physique at 177 lbs. It would take a few months, but with the right training and the right motivation, it’s achievable by anyone.
NY Elite: What can we expect from you in 2017?
Alex Folacci: I am hoping to expand and help over 60 more people this year. Also, I’m working on developing new gear for my company, RAPIDE Fitness equipment. So far we’ve only received positive reviews and 100% satisfaction on the quality of the first products that we launched and I am really excited by this new adventure! I would like to say a big Thank You to my mentor Jared Orkin, who helped me a lot with this project.
