Danamarie Gangone: The fashion designer and model ready to rule the Catwalk

Model and Designer Danamarie Gangone talks with NY Elite about her work, her inspirations, passions and current projects.

NY Elite: Tell us about your career as designer, make up artist and model. How did you get started?

Danamarie Gangone: I started out designing clothes at a very young age. I would cut up old t-shirts to make outfits for my barbie dolls and that progressed into a passion for creating clothing. I became obsessed with anything to do with fashion and decided early on to make it a career.

The make up artistry came later in my high school years during school productions it was always on the back burner for me and coincided with my drive for designing.

NY Elite: What are you currently working on?

Danamarie Gangone: Currently I do not not have anything in the works for designing I plan on going back to school to further my education as of right now. I am however waiting for a response for America’s Next Top Model.

NY Elite: What sparked your interest in fashion?

Danamarie Gangone: My interest in fashion peaked when i saw my first runway show on television. I was watching during fashion week when I was about 11 years old or so and realized “wow making clothes is a real job, that’s what I want to do”.

NY Elite: What has been the highlight of your career so far?

Danamarie Gangone: The highlight of my career so far has been working at The Videogames off broadway doing SFX makeup. It was a great experience. As for Fashion I have yet to hit a big highlight.

NY Elite: Define fashion.

Danamarie Gangone: Fashion to me is moving art. No matter what angle it’s being photographed from or if it’s presented on a runway it’s a moving sculpture that can be possessed by anyone.

NY Elite: What do you consider the important facets of the fashion industry?

Danamarie Gangone: The most important facet to the industry to me is the marketing approach. You could have the most beautiful garment in the world, but without the proper way of displaying it to the target customer you might as well be selling a trash bag.

NY Elite: How would you describe your personal style?

Danamarie Gangone: My personal style is all over the place honestly. My style jumps from a little punk, to girly and frilly, to bohemian, and retro. I also usually have a crazy hair color but for now it’s white.

NY Elite: What’s your latest fashion design project?

Danamarie Gangone: My latest projects are summer mix and match separates.

NY Elite: Where do you find the inspiration for each collection?

Danamarie Gangone: My collection inspirations generally come from childhood nostalgia, things or concepts that are juxtaposing, or if I simply see something that catches my eye I extrapolate on the idea incorporating the colors, textures, or patterns of the object.

NY Elite: What makes your fashion unique?

Danamarie Gangone: I think mixing patterns and textiles that wouldn’t normally go together and making them work is what makes my design aesthetic unique.

NY Elite: Your Top 3 fashion shows?

Danamarie Gangone: Moschino, Miu Miu, and Dior are my favorites to see they’re always so exciting.

NY Elite: In your creations how would you relate past and present fashion trends?

Danamarie Gangone: I love to draw inspirations from the past for silhouettes in my designs. Something about taking a traditional shape and combining it with outlandish colors and prints really strikes my creative core.

NY Elite: Who inspires you the most in fashion? Anyone who stands out?

Danamarie Gangone: Right now Jeremy Scott is a huge role model in aesthetics for me. He’s not afraid to get weird with fashion, and I admire that.

NY Elite: What are your goals as a model, designer and artist?

Danamarie Gangone: My goal is to become a theatrical costumer designer for Broadway and off Broadway productions. I think I’m on a fairly decent trajectory for my goals.

NY Elite: What is next for you?

Danamarie Gangone: My future hopefully includes making it onto America’s Next Top Model, but if that doesn’t happen I’m always moving and working towards the next big thing.

Danamarie Gangone: What inspires your work?

Danamarie Gangone: My collection inspirations generally come from childhood nostalgia, things or concepts that are juxtaposing, or if I simply see something that catches my eye I extrapolate on the idea incorporating the colors, textures, or patterns of the object.

NY Elite: What makes your fashion unique?

Danamarie Gangone: I think mixing patterns and textiles that wouldn’t normally go together and making them work is what makes my design aesthetic unique.
