Meet the Artist: NY Elite Interview with Actor Kushtrim Hoxha
NY Elite: What are you latest and current movie projects?
Kushtrim Hoxha: Latest project I worked on was a movie I shot in Kosovo called “Cold November” written by Arian Krasniqi and Ismet Sijarina and directed by Ismet Sijarina. The movie is due to come out on February 2018 and it’s a Kosovo-Albania co-production.
NY Elite: Can you tell us about your character in the film?
Kushtrim Hoxha: The film takes place in the early 90’s during the beginning of the turmoil in former Yugoslavia, when the Albanian population in Kosovo decided to create parallel institutions, most of the Albanians were thrown out of their jobs and lived in total apartheid. The character I play decides to stay in his workplace and work with the Serbs due to his poverty level. After that he is subjected to abuse from his Serbian co-workers and Albanian population who consider him a traitor.
NY Elite: What was it like working with the director?
Kushtrim Hoxha: Ismet is a very talented, modern and smart director who knew exactly what he wanted. He is very open to ideas and willing to let the actors explore. It was a great experience working with him, also having in mind that he trusted me to play the lead role in his movie.
NY Elite: Among all your roles so far, which has been your favorite one and why?
Kushtrim Hoxha: For many years now I have performed in theatre and on TV, and I find each role to be interesting and unique in its own way. I cannot differentiate many of the roles I have played, but I can mention some roles that had significant impact in my career like Montano in Othello at the Old Globe Theatre, Stefan on the TV series The Americans , and the role of Fadil from the latest movie Cold November.
NY Elite: What do you enjoy most about your acting career?
Kushtrim Hoxha: To me acting is a process of exploring and growing as a human being, it is not about fame or fortune. I am going to continue to explore more roles and find out even more details about myself in the characters that I will play, and that makes it even more exciting.
NY Elite: What other hobbies and interests do you have?
Kushtrim Hoxha: I like to write music when I have free time, I am very passionate about music.
NY Elite: Are you working on your next project now?
Kushtrim Hoxha: Currently I am waiting for new opportunities, auditioning and will see what the future holds.
NY Elite: What personal advice would you give to someone about impressing the directors during audition? How to audition?
Kushtrim Hoxha: Auditioning is a hard process because no matter how good you think you are or how well you think you did it is not under your control. You have to get used to constant state of rejection and not get disappointed, but my advice would be to keep auditioning, prepare, be yourself and never give up.
NY Elite: What causes/charities you actively support or feel strongly about?
Kushtrim Hoxha: I am a big supporter of freedom of speech and freedom of movement. It is unbelievable to me that 20 years after the war the people of Kosovo still have to wait in line to obtain a visa. I think that is inhumane and a big injustice .
NY Elite: What are the things in your life that you’re most grateful for?
Kushtrim Hoxha: I am grateful that I have a wonderful family. Nothing gives me more joy.
