The Foundation that is saving the lives of mothers and children in Kosovo

Action for Mothers and Children (AMC) has a simple powerful goal: to save the lives of mothers and children in Kosovo.

AMC has been at the forefront of efforts to improve maternal and child health in Kosovo since 2009. Influential individuals from health, business, culture and economic sectors from Kosovo, US, and Diaspora joined the efforts to support the cause and grew the foundation into today’s local organization named Action for Mothers and Children since 2012.

AMC’s goal to save the lives of children and mothers in Kosovo is realized through four program streams: 1) Education, 2) Supply, 3) Research, and 4) Advocacy. AMC supports Gynecology/Obstetrics Clinics (that care for mothers), Neonatology Intensive Care Units (that care for pre-mature babies) and Pediatric Clinics (that care for children suffering of Leukemia, heart diseases, asthma and other illnesses) in the Republic of Kosovo.

One of the biggest issues in Kosovo’s current healthcare still is the high infant and maternal mortality rate – the highest in Europe! AMC has been at the forefront of the battle to bring the infant mortality rate down. From 29/1,000 infant deaths in the year 2000, together with many partners from Kosovo, US and Europe, Kosovo declared a mortality rate of around 10/1,000 births in 2016.

“Today, the foundation leads 7 national programs that are improving the systems to provide better quality of care for mothers and children, ranging from women’s health resource centers, delivery of essential medication and equipment for mothers and children, policy research and advocacy influencing dozens of country policies, regulating baby transportation system in the country, cervical cancer screening program, social enterprise programs that employ marginalized women, and up to staff capacity building to improve the care delivered for mothers and children in Kosovo,” said Mrika Aliu, AMC Executive Director for NY Elite.

Since its establishment, more than 3000 women have benefited from AMC programs and more than 300 babies every month receive treatment from supplies and medication provided by AMC and other quality improvement programs.

AMC is lead by a group of young leaders, follows the American model of philanthropy, and is an excellent example how support from the United States can create a sustainable and influential NGO in Kosovo.
