Meet the Artist: Interview with Sarah Kri

NY Elite: Tell us a little about yourself as an artist.

Sarah Kri: Well my main field I am working on is my Photography right now but I write lyrics and music all the time to let go of emotions that built up inside me and try to destroy my brain. So when I am not busy with doing photoshoots I write lyrics or when I can´t sleep at night, that´s when my best ideas come!

NY Elite: How did you get started and how would you describe your music?

Sarah Kri: I always had a deep connection with music, at around the age of 6 I went to the church choir for about 7 years and always loved playing and singing in musicals which were organized by it.

My real start as a musician can be dated quite accurately. It was my very first concert I went to in 2010 and it was GREEN DAY. I always loved their music and they are my idols till this day and probably my favourite band. It really sparked that final thing inside me that I want to be a musician too and I want to learn play guitar because I´ve written lyrics since I am 11 years old. So I asked my mom if we have a guitar and luckily she had a really old one she played herself when she was younger.

I had basically no idea how to do anything started by threading the guitar strings or how to tune it so it sounded really crappy in the beginning. I literally sat down 5 hours every single day and practiced, bought myself a book with the basic chords and riffs and binge watched tons of youtube guitar lessons. Because I was afraid to lose interest in the instrument and I didn´t have the time I never took any professional lessons so one of my first songs I was able play were “Good Riddance” and “21 Guns” by Green Day.

And since that point I kept writing lyrics and started jamming with other people that became good friends and motivated me to keep going and inspired me actually with my first melody to come up. But that first original song came together after 1 year of work when I decided to join a Singer/Songwriter Contest by fender but unfortunately I didn’t make it to the next round.

I´d describe my genre as melodic singer/songwriter style mixed with some rap parts but would like to go more into the Rock/Punkrock direction.

NY Elite: What does art mean to you?

Sarah Kri: Since I can think I´ve always used art as a way to express my emotions and let go of anger. It really saved my life. Music saved my life. When I was on my rock bottom worst I plugged in my headphones turned up the volume and imagined myself being either the singer of the songs screaming and singing my lungs out to numb my inner pain. Art is my life and always will be and I would love to spread that spirit out to other people to make them feel they´re not alone because someone else had to deal with the same problems.

NY Elite: What projects are you currently working on?

Sarah Kri: Musically I´m constantly writing lyrics and I might be able to put together like an EP. But till then I need more practice and first of all buy the equipment like a microphone and a better laptop because the one I own right now is very old and constantly crashing down. Till I can afford that I will work on my photography commissions to save up some money.

My most recent project was the cover design artwork I did for Cynation’s new upcoming single “GO LOUIE GO”. It was a lot of work and I spent too many nights working and fighting with my computer but I finally made it work and am super happy I got it done!

NY Elite: Where was your last performance?

Sarah Kri: That will sound pretty funny now but it was on my prom where I rewrote the lyrics of a very famous song by the German band “JULI” and put a very ironic and sarcastic spin on my school years. It was not really a performance of my own music since I didn´t have anything finished by that but it was still an awesome feeling that got me addicted.  I want to play on open stages in Stuttgart soon and some other cities too when I have enough songs to perform.

NY Elite: Where would you most like to perform?

Sarah Kri: That is a really difficult question for me, I´d be more than happy to present one day a bigger audience my musical work. Since I didn’t move forward in the fender Competition where the winner would play in the admiral´s palace in Berlin this would be my place I´d love to play one day. Another place I´d love to play at would also be the LKA Longhorn in Stuttgart. It´s quite a small venue but I really have seen many of my favorite bands (Sum 41, Itchy Poopzkid, Donots…)  play there and so many great memories connected with that place.

I also like how rough that location looks it kinda reminds me of those little clubs and bars when all the punk bands started playin in the 70s. And there is a third place I want to go to which is the 924Gilman street in Berkely, CA. It is a place where young Green Day played and I think that would be awesome to see it in real life.

NY Elite: If you could try a new genre of music, what would it be?

Sarah Kri: It would probably be the Punkrock Genre mixed with electronic parts and rap since my favorite bands all do those kind of music genres.

NY Elite: Do you enjoy writing music and/or lyrics?

Sarah Kri: Yes I really do. I am better at writing lyrics and try to make my way into composing which is not that easy but I hopefully will improve my skills. Writing Lyrics or generally texts is my outlet to deal with my dark thoughts in my head that get too loud and overwhelming at many days. So I really put all of my heart and emotion into these songs I think that is what makes great lyrics people can relate to. It´s just honesty.

NY Elite: Do You Have a Formal Music Education / Training?

Sarah Kri: Haha well if my church choir and my bad xylophone lessons as a kid count then it’s a yes. Other than that I am self taught.

NY Elite: Do you play any instruments?

Sarah Kri: Yes I play concert and e-guitar I adore! And a little bit of piano.

NY Elite: What hidden talents do you have?

Sarah Kri: I don’t know if that’s a hidden talent but I am pretty good at being insomniac and being a very sarcastic person to talk to which can be quite exhausting sometimes (at least that’s what I get told).

NY Elite: Who Are Your Musical Influences?

Sarah Kri: If I have to name a few it would be of course GREEN DAY, Linkin Park, Sum 41, Twenty One Pilots and Nirvana. But these bands inspire me more on the lyrical way as on the melody, but not on my style of music yet. Im still trying to make my way to rock music.

NY Elite: What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?

Sarah Kri: I´d say improve your skills always keep going make the right connections to the right people and success will come over time. But always expect to work really really hard.

NY Elite: What can we expect from you in 2017?

Sarah Kri: Well that depends how many official commissions I will get for any of my creative fields and how my health is developing. I´m planning to start a blog for my photography beside my instagram and Youtube channel and will put out some work there. End of September will be the release of “GO Loui GO” which I did the cover design for so I´m really excited for that. I`m also developing my second Instagram account ms_needlecrew which is a photography featuring platform and should be a community for everyone that wants to create content, inspire others and also help each other grow and improve.
