Meet the Artist: NY Elite Interview with Blerta Gace
NY Elite: What are you latest projects?
Blerta Gace: First and foremost I thank you for this interview. I was cast as Fatima in ‘Pentecost’ –a play by David Edgar and directed by John Grabowski. It opened at Shetler Theatre 54 in New York.
NY Elite: Can you tell us about your character you play in ‘Pentecost’
Blerta Gace: I played Fatima who is a Kurdish refugee seeking Asylum in Europe. I loved the character and the challenge that came with playing her. I was passionate about playing her and being a part of this play. Fatima has had a tragic life having to endure more than most at her age. She is a former PKK fighter whose mother and son have been murdered and father killed in the Halabja massacre. I dived into the character with my heart and soul determined to do her story justice and to bring her alive onstage every night.
NY Elite: What was it like working with the director?
Blerta Gace: It was great. It was an honor to work with John Grabowski as a director. He challenged us to be better actors but also to be better human beings. It was touching to see how much he loved this play and how committed he was to it and how committed he was to helping all of us actors in the process.
NY Elite: In which movies have you played lead role?
Blerta Gace: I have played lead in Shira-Lee Shalit’s short film ‘Daredevil”.
NY Elite: Among all your roles so far, which has been your favorite one and why?
Blerta Gace: My favorite definitely Fatima that I just played in “Pentecost”. It challenged me in ways I have not been challenged before and in a way it re-introduced me to myself. I had to dig deep into my own self in order to play her.
NY Elite: What do you enjoy most about your acting career?
Blerta Gace: All of it. I started out singing and dancing. I used to only enjoy the “final product” or the performance itself-but throughout the years I have come to appreciate and honor the process…even when it gets hard. I act and perform because it’s my soul’s calling and it gives me immense joy.
NY Elite: What other hobbies and interests do you have?
Blerta Gace: As I mentioned above music is a big part of my life. I love to dance, I love to read books and I have made meditation and a daily spiritual practice a part of my life now. Oh and I love boxing (smiles).
NY Elite: Are you working on your next project now?
Blerta Gace: I am. My dear friend, talented director Adam Elhaddad and I are working on a short film.
NY Elite: What personal advice would you give to someone about impressing the directors during audition? How to audition?
Blerta Gace: Thank you for this question. I would advise them to be authentic, to be who they really are because that is their super power. To not go into an audition room or any room “trying to impress” but to show up fully as themselves-to have the courage to show up and be seen AND to do the doing- to act truthfully and be present in that moment and trust in themselves and their ability.
NY Elite: What causes/charities you actively support or feel strongly about?
Blerta Gace: I volunteer with the church and their homeless meal outreach program. Next I will be joining other volunteers for “God’s love we deliver” in Manhattan again with meals for people who are home –bound and too sick to cook or shop for themselves.
Other causes I care deeply about are Women’s Issues and Rights. Equality. Immigration.
NY Elite: What are the things in your life that you’re most grateful for?
Blerta Gace: My family, my friends, the gift of life, this interview, this day and for every moment that I breathe. I am thankful and grateful for all of it. And most importantly my faith in God.
