Meet the Artist: Interview with soprano singer Gjylie Pelingu
NY Elite: Tell us a little about yourself as an artist.
Gjylie Pelingu: I began my music education as I was 6 years old. At first I began with piano lessons in Montenegro – Ulcinj. After I absolve my piano education, I began taking singing lessons. Truth be told, at first I didn’t think about being an opera singer, because our information in Montenegro about Opera singing and in general classical music it’s weak. But every lesson that I had in begging, had impressed me more and more. So after six months of singing I went to XX national competition in Montenegro, which I won third place. And from that moment my way and my will to be a opera singer began.
After that I was again in XXII national competition in Montenegro , 2010 in International competition “Bruna Spiler “ – Montenegro, 2010 in International competition “ Ars Kosova” – Kosovo which I was honored with first places. I began my University studies in Albania- Tirana in year 2010 in the class of prof. Manjola Nallbani. Finished my bachelor in 2013 and in the same year began my Master studies also in University of Arts in Tirana with the same prof. Manjola Nallbani. I had some masterclasses which one of the most important is the European Summer Music Academy (ESMA) in Kosovo, which I was in the class of prof. Caroline Merz – Germany. I had many concerts in Montenegro, Albania, Croatia, Bosna&Herzegovina, Slovenia, Turkey, Austria. Also I had some solistic concerts in the year 2009 in Ulcinj together with the famous Albanian tenor Kastriot Tusha, 2013 in Albania (Shkodra and Tirana), 2014 with the orchestra of “ Aleksander Moisiu in Albania ( Durresi), 2015 in Croatia (Zagreb) in accompoiment Fatime Buzuku (piano) .
NY Elite: How did you get started and how would you describe your music?
Gjylie Pelingu: With opera singing I began accidentally. So I went to my singing lessons just as a hobby and only to have more affirmation about music. But after a while I began to love that kind of music, I began to hear more and more famous opera singers like Maria Callas, Anna Netrebko, Anna Moffo .. and I felt that this is what I want and in what I feel complete.
I can’t say that I’m focused in one composer . For example I love Mozart , the way that he wrote the operas, the thematic (theme) that he took ..I say always Mozart is a different school for singers ..he was so specific in his music, where also the simplest pause in the part , is a sound in its way. But I also do love Verdi, Puccini, Donizzeti for the music lines , the emotion and the freedom that the composers sometimes gave to singers. I love and I sing everything that is good for me and for my voice
NY Elite: What does art mean to you?
Gjylie Pelingu: Mmm .. Everybody has a different opinion about this question ..When we speak about a good artist, of course his/her technique must be in the right place, and some of them think that the only thing needed is the technique. But I think technique without emotions is not complete. When I sing I always try, that what I have in my heart, the emotion that I feel, to touch the hearts of the public. My objective is to be one with my public, to be near emotionally with each other. And that is the beauty that music does, to connect each other and be one.
NY Elite: What projects are you currently working on?
Gjylie Pelingu: In March I have some concerts in Montenegro, while I’m also preparing my solistic concert in Montenegro , and in that month I’m going in (to) Germany to my professor Caroline Merz.. (Good things will come but everything in the right time and place.) Hoping for good things to come but as everything needs the right time and place.
NY Elite: Where was your last performance?
Gjylie Pelingu: Not long ago I came back from Germany – Dusseldorf, where I was with my prof. Caroline Merz . My last performance was on January in Podgorica.
NY Elite: Where would you most like to perform and tell us about some of your favorite projects you have been part of.
Gjylie Pelingu: Of course my dream is to sing at the biggest opera houses. Every dream is accomplished with hard work and discipline . Every journey is difficult but hard work and talent are always rewarded. In every project that I was part of, for me it was a pleasure and a great experience. In every performance, artists learn something new, so I’m feeling lucky and grateful for every project that I took part in.
NY Elite: If you could try a new genre of music, what would it be?
Gjylie Pelingu: Actually I didn’t think of it at all .. I love this kind of music that I make , love everything about classical music , and for this reason I didn’t… Of course I listen to all genre of music like: pop , rock , r&b ..but I never tried to sing those kind of genres … Maybe after some years if I would like to try something new …
NY Elite: Do You Have a Formal Music Education / Training?
Gjylie Pelingu: As I said In the beginning, I finished my Master degree in Albania – Tirana, and now I take lessons with prof. Caroline Merz in Germany – Dusseldorf .
NY Elite: Do you play any instruments?
Gjylie Pelingu: I still play the piano, but any other instrument not…I also would so much like to learn to play guitar, but for now I don’t have time .. maybe in future I will find time to do that.
NY Elite: What hidden talents do you have?
Gjylie Pelingu: I am very passionate about drawing . Even when taking a little break from studying I draw ..It’s something that I always enjoyed to do as a child and still do..In every part that I study have some draw inside.. haha.
NY Elite: Who Are Your Musical Influences?
Gjylie Pelingu: I always liked the old singers , their clear singing , with no excessive exaggerations and brilliant technical . The singers that I always listen are Edita Gruberova, Anna Moffo, Maria Callas, Joan Sutherland, Mirella Freni.. but also actually singers like Anna Netrebko , Rene Fleming, Dina Damrau , Sumi Jo ..
NY Elite: What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?
Gjylie Pelingu: I advice every person to follow their dream. Everything is accomplished and nothing is unattainable . The only need devotion , hard work and love what you do and want to achieve.
