In this exclusive interview the talented actor Antonio Bustorff talks to us about his latest exciting projects, IBJJF European Championship, his interest in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and much more.
NY Elite: What are you latest and current movie projects?
Antonio Bustorff: My latest movie project was the third installment of Gerard Butler’s “Olympus Has Fallen”, “London Has Fallen” trilogy, the much anticipated “Angel Has Fallen” directed by Ric Roman Waugh.
NY Elite: Can you tell us about your character in the film?
Antonio Bustorff: Can’t tell you much, but I can tell you I am a South European highly trained mercenary sent out to carry a specific task in this film.
NY Elite: What was it like working with the director?
Antonio Bustorff: Working with Ric was an amazing experience, he is a director focused on the “real”, every scene transmits a “real” feel to it, regardless of how spectacular a particular scene might look you will never question “could that really happen?”, watch his previous movie “Shot Caller” starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and you will see what I am mean, So powerful.
NY Elite: In which movies have you played lead role?
Antonio Bustorff: No lead role yet! When the right one comes along I will. When people label you the “Portuguese Statham” it sets you in a certain direction, but I like to believe that I am like a clean canvas where anything can be drawn or sketched, and I will become whatever the character needs to be.
NY Elite: Among all your roles so far, which has been your favourite one and why?
Antonio Bustorff: I would say the one I just finished in “Angel Has Fallen”. My acting skills were joined with my Martial Arts skills, and that was amazing since the month before the audition I just had become British Champion again and the month before that I took Silver in the IBJJF European Championship so when the casting director Dan Hubbard was asking for an actor with a real fighting/combat experience, my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu hit the spot, I mean, a lot of people watch UFC, so more and more people are aware of the efficiency and practicality of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. A big thank you to Dan Hubbard and Claire Robinson for the opportunity, it came at the perfect time!
NY Elite: What do you enjoy most about your acting career?
Antonio Bustorff: The ability to create, to build a character. The only limit to what you can achieve, to what you can create, it’s you. Let go of yourself, your beliefs, your pre-concept ideas, explore, discover what the character can be, but always keep it close to you, make it personal, become one. Then, when the director says “Action” set it free.
NY Elite: What other hobbies and interests do you have?
Antonio Bustorff: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, I am a Gracie Barra full time athlete, I train in Gracie Barra Bath with Professor Salvatore Pace. I am the coach for our anti-bullying kids program in the school too. I love horse riding, been riding since a very young age and clay pigeon shooting, those would be my favourite hobbies outside martial arts.
NY Elite: Are you working on your next project now?
Antonio Bustorff: At the moment nothing confirmed yet, but I had some amazing auditions, doors that were opened to me by the amazing Emily Maguire at Reflections Talent Agency so fingers crossed!
NY Elite: What personal advice would you give to someone about impressing the directors during audition? How to audition?
Antonio Bustorff: My personal advice is stop trying to find a magic formula that will give you all the solutions and land you a part that was not meant for you. Yes it sounds personal if I say it like that, but when a part is meant for you it’s yours nothing will change that. The casting process is not personal at all, it never is. You just got to understand that the Director has a picture in his head, a vision, a character he imagined in the story and it’s all down to you fitting that picture in his head.
We make it personal because we want the role for ourselves and we then start focusing on trying to impress someone rather than focusing on the character we are auditioning for. Just see it as the fact that the CD is calling you in for an audition means that you are already possibly in that picture in the directors head, so, let it go, relax, be genuine, be yourself, be punctual, professional, make decisions about how to play the character and stick to them, know the text so well that it can only sound as natural as the first time is being said. Action!
NY Elite: What causes/charities you actively support or feel strongly about?
Antonio Bustorff: Through Professor Salvatore Pace at Gracie Barra Bath I am involved in the Cancer Research UK white collar boxing fund raising events, I have a loved one with a constant battle with cancer for the last 10 years, every time we think it’s gone, it comes back stronger. I strongly believe that we will beat cancer for good!
Another cause is bullying, I am the coach for our anti-bullying program where we coach kids from as young as 4 years hold to prevent bullying from happening and how to take control of that situation and defend themselves in case an adult isn’t around to intervene. Also, in our school we focus on supporting our community and it’s a fact that Jiu Jitsu changes lives. I have always believed in giving second chances and helping people that somehow find trouble in their lives. My hope is that Jiu Jitsu is one of the elements that helps put them back on track.
NY Elite: What are the things in your life that you’re most grateful for?
Antonio Bustorff: I am grateful for the fact that my mother never gave up on me. I am grateful for the experiences I been through, even the ones at the time that made me feel it was the end of the world, that there would be no tomorrow… the ones that so strongly convinced me that I reached the end of the line. They made me discover that they were only the end of a “chapter” and straight away (because time never stops) the start of a new much better one.
I am grateful for finding peace, happiness and feelings towards someone. Words can’t express how much they mean to me and how grateful I am to have someone like my partner Jade, in my life.
