NY Elite: What made you pursue film making?

Devin Williams: Stanley Kubrick; Oliver Stone & Spike Lee. Each of these filmmakers were master storytellers and either tackled very unique aspects of humanity for the first time or in a way never done before.

NY Elite: Tell us about your current/latest project.

Devin Williams: Being Producer and partner to Darien Sills-Evans for ONE BEDROOM has been an amazing adventure. We talked about making this film for a few years and I had a great understanding of his vision. I’m happy to do my part to bring this story to life with him. We have some other projects in mind, but it wouldn’t be fair to talk about them until we see this current project reach it’s full potential. The cast and crew of ONE BEDROOM deserve more time to see this film appreciated on it’s own.

NY Elite: What drew you to this project and what excited you about making this film?

Devin Williams: Darien (writer/director/lead actor & producer) is a rare talent and a pleasure to work with. We are both willing to work hard, but we also look to be efficient. I enjoy our shared dedication and opportunity to learn from our shared experiences. We really do have fun when and where we can.

NY Elite: What is the theme/subject “One Bedroom”?

Devin Williams: Romantic Comedy that reminds us to appreciate the good things while we have them, but knowing when it’s time to move on. How do you leave someone when you know that you still love them and they love you?

NY Elite: Who are you collaborating with on this film?

Devin Williams: Darien; Jon Laster (well known stand up comedian making his move into film); Stephen Hill (actor currently cast as a regular in a CBS series, Magnum PI);  & Devin Nelson (ONE BEDROOM lead actress and newcomer with a theatre and dance background).

NY Elite: What do you hope the audience will take away from this film?

Devin Williams: Some good hearty laughs. We wanted to tell a story that was familiar. Most people have experienced some aspect of this breakup story and even though they can be horrible at the time, most of us laugh after.

NY Elite: What films have been the most inspiring or influential to you and why?

Devin Williams: 2001 Space Odyssey, Clockwork Orange and Wall Street – What did I say about Kubrick! The man would tell an amazing story with the camera alone. Oliver Stone told a story that was so big at the time but hard to express to most. He made it real to everyone. Spike Lee really did something special with Do The Right Thing. That was the first time I really understood the power of a statement film. People will be talking about it’s place in American history for generations.

NY Elite: What makes a film great for you? Are there certain qualities that make a film better for you?

Devin Williams: I always want to know if I have a story and characters that allow the audience to suspend their disbelief for the duration of the film and put themselves in a place where they can accept the world we are creating. It doesn’t matter if that world is over the top science fiction or loosely based on the real world. The ability to get the audience to suspend their disbelief is the first step to connect with a relatable story. A great film is all about telling a good story!

NY Elite: Which book would you love to make a film out of one day?

Devin Williams: Caliban’s War and other James Corey works. I like the flexibility of science fiction.

NY Elite: Can you tell us about the greatest moment in your film career?

Devin Williams: Getting a chance to talk with Darien when we were promoting BIG WORDS at the 2013 Slamdance Film Festival. We talked about doing things that we are only making happen now. It’s fun to dream.

NY Elite: Which particular film maker has influenced you the most?

Devin Williams: The same 3 I mentioned. I just cannot pick one of them. Honorable mention to Sir Alfred Hitchcock.

NY Elite: What advice would you give to someone who wanted to have a life creating film?

Devin Williams: Be sure to find people who understand but also inspire you.

NY Elite: NY Elite: Can you tell us more about your upcoming project(s)?

Devin Williams: I know what I want to do, but since we are still traveling and promoting ONE BEDROOM, I don’t want to mention them just yet. I will say that I like working with people I have success with, so you may see some familiar faces and names associated with my future projects.
