About FGI

It all began in 1928 when 17 women, invited by Edna Woolman Chase, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue, met for lunch in a modest midtown New York Restaurant. They shared three things: each held a job in the business of fashion, each held all other in high regard and believed fashion needed a forum to express and enhance a widening awareness of the American fashion business and womens roles in that business. The Fashion Group was born. Some of the Founding and Charter members include Elizabeth Arden, Eleanor Roosevelt, Helena Rubinstein and Edith Head.

Many decades later the names have changed, but the energy, talent and commitment remain the same. In November 1956, the Toronto Chapter of The Fashion Group International began with a luncheon of high-profile women in the fashion industry, at the home of Dora Matthews, from Eatons fashion bureau. The following March, the Toronto Chapter launched with a show and exhibit of couture fashion illustrating period styles and great dressmaking. The pieces were subsequently donated to the Royal Ontario Museum as a resource for Canadian designers. Since then, we have evolved into a fashion community of business entrepreneurs in fashion, beauty, interior design, photography, art and film helping our members to elevate, educate and empower their business through our programs and events.
